Photo of the Day: ‘the galway hooker’ by gerard conran.

The Galway Hooker is a traditional boat from Galway Bay in Ireland. Characterised by its distinctive sail setup - a main sale and two foresails, the boats have been in use for at least two hundred years, although it has been suggested that the design of the boat may date back further owing to the Arabic dhow-like appearance of the boats.

There has been a renewed interest in the Galway Hooker in recent years. During the annual festival of Cruinniú na mBád, boats race across Galway Bay from Connemara to Kinvara.
